Short answer: yes, but not only, and less than before.
When ChatGPT search launched in late 2024, OpenAI said it used third-party search providers and content from partners. Its VP of Engineering said Bing was an important one. That produced an easy rule: rank in Bing, show up in ChatGPT. In 2026 the rule no longer holds.
Where ChatGPT's results come from
In September 2026, Peec AI published an investigation of the server-side events ChatGPT sends while it answers. Those events label where each result came from. This is what the study found:
| Source | What it supplies |
|---|---|
| OpenAI's own index ("Labrador") | Pages crawled by OpenAI, split into vertical indexes such as web, news and shopping |
| Scraping providers (Bright, Oxylabs) | Google web results, Google Maps and news |
| Microsoft Web IQ | Grounding results from Microsoft's platform |
| Yelp, TripAdvisor | Local business data |
| Bing | Referenced in Deep Research sessions |
Peec counted at least eight external providers on top of OpenAI's own index. The mix shifts with the query and with experiments OpenAI is running, so read the table as a snapshot, not a spec.
Two consequences follow. A page that ranks in Bing can still be missing from ChatGPT, because Bing is one input among many. And a drop in Google rankings can carry into ChatGPT, because Google results reach it through scraping providers.
The three OpenAI user agents
OpenAI runs separate agents for separate jobs. Mixing them up is a common robots.txt mistake.
Blocking GPTBot does not remove you from ChatGPT search. Blocking OAI-SearchBot does. If you want to opt out of training but stay visible in answers, say so explicitly:
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
ChatGPT-User acts on behalf of a person, and OpenAI's documentation says robots.txt rules may not apply to those visits. If you need to stop them, do it at the firewall, and accept that you are blocking requests real people made.
Check your CDN as well. Cloudflare and similar services can challenge or block AI agents whatever robots.txt says. A 403 to OAI-SearchBot is as final as a Disallow line.
What to do about it
1. Let OAI-SearchBot in. Allow it in robots.txt and in your firewall rules, then confirm a 200 response:
curl -s -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code}\n" \
-A "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; OAI-SearchBot; +https://openai.com/searchbot)" \
https://your-site.com/
2. Put your content in the raw HTML. Like GPTBot, assume OAI-SearchBot reads only the HTML your server returns. Content that appears after JavaScript runs never reaches OpenAI's index, however well the page ranks elsewhere. Can ChatGPT read your website? shows how to check in five minutes.
3. Keep Google and Bing strong. Both still feed ChatGPT, directly or through providers. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and consider IndexNow so Bing hears about changes quickly.
4. Fix your local listings if you serve a local market. Yelp and TripAdvisor data reaches ChatGPT directly, so errors there become errors in answers.
5. Test the answer, not only the fetch. Ask ChatGPT your buyers' questions in a fresh chat with search on, and note which sources it cites. Repeat monthly. If you are missing, work through why your website is not showing up in ChatGPT, cause by cause.
What it means for your website
Google's own AI search guide says much the same for its engines, with one difference: Googlebot runs your JavaScript and OpenAI's crawlers do not.

FAQ
Common questions
Short answers to what people ask most about this topic.
Does ChatGPT use Bing?
Partly. When ChatGPT search launched in 2024, OpenAI said it uses third-party search providers, and its VP of Engineering named Bing as an important one. A September 2026 investigation by Peec AI found OpenAI's own index plus at least eight external providers, including Google data, Microsoft's Web IQ, Yelp and TripAdvisor.
If I rank well in Bing, will I appear in ChatGPT?
Not reliably. Bing is one input among several, and the mix changes by query. Strong Bing rankings help, but they no longer predict ChatGPT citations on their own.
Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT search?
No. GPTBot crawls for model training. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot. Block GPTBot and allow OAI-SearchBot if you want to opt out of training but stay visible in search answers.
Does ChatGPT have its own search index?
Yes. Peec AI's September 2026 study found an OpenAI index called Labrador, made up of several vertical indexes, used alongside external providers.
