When AI Can't Find (or Trust) Your Business

This week's stories share one theme: AI systems often struggle to read, verify, or trust what's actually on your website. From a free tool that helps AI understand your pages to research on how thin records get distorted, here's what it means for your site.

Ahrefs launches free llms.txt generator tool

Ahrefs released a free tool that creates an llms.txt file for your website, built on their analysis of 137,000 domains. The file is meant to give AI systems a clearer guide to your site's key pages.

What this means for your website: Try the free llms.txt generator to give AI tools a clearer map of your most important pages.

AI search often can't verify or trust your business

According to Search Engine Land, an audit of 71 businesses found major gaps in AI retrievability, including unreadable websites, dead domains, and missing trust signals. These issues make it harder for AI systems to confirm a business is real or credible.

What this means for your website: Check that your website is readable, active, and shows clear trust signals so AI tools can verify your business exists.

Google clarifies rules on fake reviews in structured data

Google updated its documentation for review snippet structured data, according to Search Engine Land, adding new guidelines and examples. The update specifically warns against including fake or undisclosed incentivized reviews in that markup.

What this means for your website: Audit your review structured data now and remove any fake or undisclosed incentivized reviews to stay compliant.

Thin online records make businesses easy targets for AI errors

A study on arXiv tested five leading AI answer engines with questions about 28 conflicts, scoring 5,460 answers against documented evidence. The researchers found that the thinner the retrievable record on a topic, the more the engines invented, misattributed, or miscounted facts, which also made those topics easier to distort.

What this means for your website: Build out a fuller, well-documented online record for your business so AI engines have less room to invent inaccurate information about you.
